How to start your own Insurance Agency


We can approach this question from two angles. First is you are already into Insurance business and have spent couple of years as an Insurance agent for a reputed Insurance company, have knowledge about ins and outs of this business and now feel confident that you are capable of expanding your business from just an individual agent to an Agency Owner. Now you are ready to shoulder the additional responsibility of developing new marketing strategies, advancing new business rules and responsibilities.

 You can have staff for office routines like documents handling, telecallers for routine calls to prospective clients and automation facility to collect premiums and provide receipts without having to go to the head office, kind of autonomous system with an office spacious enough to double up as conference room or hold seminars when the need arises.

The second approach is if you are a fresh individual, recently cleared IRDAI exam and have the requisite license to move ahead in the field of Insurance. So the first thing that you would be required to do in this stage is to first become aware of the different policies that your company provides. Spend enough time grabbing salient points of each policy so as to be conversant enough when the prospect asks an intriguing question.

You must attend as many meetings, workshops and seminars by the company & your team leaders as possible. When you have good long contact lists and have prepared the most eligible and go to list from it you can now proceed with the next stage. The next stage for you is to qualify for promotion by selling the desired number of policies and to become eligible gradually to go for Agency Owner. The more contacts you have the better.  People working in large organizations are more desiring and cautious about future safety and have funds to invest, they are your prospects to go for. Finally you are an Agency owner.

Your commitments and handling clients and their requirements will get your Agency business going on the smooth road. Every year commissions from the premiums will be received and also from the new policies sold will be your main income. You are free to use your imagination to  ways to boost your business. Now that your Agency business is sailing smoothly try to upgrade your infrastructure and make it online compatible. Get a website created with suitably key-worded  Domain name and advertise your business in popular social media sites, use Google Ads, Bing Ads etc. to promote your business. Check and analyze traffic to your site and entice your audience with free coupons or other gifts to attract them. Use e-mail marketing to build  the list that will convert as leads and finally convert as Policy Buyers.

After you successful venture, and focus on customer service and satisfaction, you will earn enough trust that will lead you to recommendations from satisfied clients to make you MDRT a highly prestigious feather on any insurance Agents cap. You and your agency will achieve what its supposed to, that is a self sufficient, autonomous Agency business that's dream of many. Congratulations!
